Kristen and Lindsey organize the Urban Craft Uprising, Seattle’s largest indie craft show, and are also longtime vendors themselves. They’ll share with you details about the jury process, what organizers look for in an application, why the craft show scene has become so competitive, and ways you can strategize to make a more competitive application. They’ll also get into the meat of craft show vending — from how to prepare for a big show, to the hidden perks of being a vendor, as well as tips and tricks to keep your stress level down during the big day(s).

Learn the gentle, meditative handwork of Japanese Sashiko stitching. This ancient method of stitching was used on clothing to add strength and preserve its wearability for generations. Today it can be used to creatively mend clothing or add a decorative element. In this 90 minute class, Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade will walk you through the steps of Sashiko and we will stitch up a traditional pattern.

Often when we get into a groove with a product or service—when it becomes popular, and our customers expect it to stay the same—it can begin to grind us into a creative rut. This is especially true for those offering wholesale: making the same thing over and over begins to feel more tedious than creative, BUT so often it’s the thing that is paying the bills. What to do about this (rather good) problem? The metaphor of bread and butter is perfect: it’s is very delicious, but you don’t want to fill up on it before your (healthy? indulgent? fresh from the garden?) dinner comes.
So do we focus our energy on creating a “next” thing? Do we discontinue offering the thing people love because if we have to make another one we might actually die? Do we keep making it and eventually loathe our dream jobs that we worked so hard to create?
This is a strategic workshop focusing on different ways to get out of this draining cycle, without giving up on our bread and butter. It will involve ideas for ways to free up our time to focus on new endeavors through streamlining and outsourcing, and how to channel our surplus creative energy into different aspects of the business like marketing and PR.

Though a self-proclaimed spreadsheet geek, she uses nothing more complicated than TurboTax and a thorough system of record-keeping to ensure she has all the information she needs to DIY her own taxes.
While she is by no means an accountant or tax expert, she has filed her own 1040s, 1065s, 1099s, W-2s, and 941s for herself and her multiple businesses for many years. This class will outline the most important aspects of your business to keep track of, strategies and suggestions for how to incorporate this into your everyday life so that you aren’t slammed with an overwhelming amount of work come tax-time. We’ll also leave plenty of time for Q&A pertaining to any of the following topics and more:

- Doing taxes with a business partner
- Which expenses are deductible?
- Benefits to having a home office/studio space
